Long form piece commissioned for Approaching Nocturne; a group exhibition curated by Leeds based artist John Gamble. Artists respond to recordings of the Cantible chamber choir in rehearsal.
Music for Exploding Gas takes as it's chief source material two rehearsals of Stars, a work for voice and wine glasses by Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds.
Sound lifted from choir rehearsal recordings; manipulated through generative and destructive systems of processing. Vocals and glasses rearranged, re pitched, looped and assembled. Improvised piano recorded direct to C90 tape through portable Marantz and it's tiny microphone. C90 tape loops left to run until collapse. No other sound sources.
Mixed to occupy the air in the room for 25 minutes at hourly intervals for the duration of the exhibition.
(If a large, brick warehouse space with works from 11 visual artists can't be found for playback as originally intended, somewhere quiet at night will suffice.)
Assembled, recorded and exhibited in June 2017 by BP Walker.
